Grade 8 Classroom Notes

September 14, 2011

Thank you, Parents, for a great showing at Open House last week!  I enjoyed seeing or meeting you all!

We had a wonderful remembrance ceremony for September 11 yesterday.  Five students whose fathers are firemen participated and were quite impressive when they marched in and raised the American flag.  I was impressed, and I'm sure that the student body was as well.  We are all thankful that these firemen took time out their day to be a part of our special ceremony.

The high school "rush" is on.  Our visitations begin this Thursday with La Salle.  Fatima High School comes on Monday, September 19, followed by Bay View and Bishop Hendricken on September 26.  All visits take place at 8:15 a.m.  Please ask your children for the folders, etc. that will be passed out during these visits.  There is a great deal of information in these folders.

Have a great week!
Miss Kelly

It's great to be back to school; I hope the eighth graders feel the same! We had a successful start last week. Everything went very smoothly. Eighth grade is a busy year filled with many activities. The Catholic high schools will be sending out speakers by the end of the month, we'll discuss class trip to get an early start, we have our kick-off for school fudnraisers, and of course, school work. I'll keep you up to date through through the web site and notices home.
I hope to see you all at Open House on Wednesday, September 7.
Best regards,
Miss Kelly

November

Dear Parents,

Apparently I did not properly save my last message in early October - my apologies.  I wanted to let you know that the high shool visitations had been completed, and Open Houses would start in October through November.  Your children were given all the information.  The entrance exam is on Saturday, December 5.  Your child should take the exam at his/her first choice for high school.

Community service letters and forms went out on September 28.  Many students are getting service hours around the school.  I would like them to volunteer at nursing homes, soup kitchens, and around churches as well.  I want the class to experience as many different forms of service as possible.

Grade 8 will be starting the Clothing Drive at the end of the week.  If there are any parents who could help separate clothing and arrange by adult or child and type of clothing, I would be most grateful. A notice will go home Wednesday.

I will be sending home a survey about taking an extended class trip to Pennsylvania soon.  An extended trip will cost around $550.00 for four days possibly five.  The bus is the biggest expense.  With the economy the way it is, the decision is up to you.  We will sell candy bars to help defray the cost of the trip be it a day trip or extended trip.  Our bake sale in October was a success and those proceeds will also help towards the trip.

Most students continue to do well in their studies, but extra study time could propel them into the excellent range where most should be.

I spoke to the class last week about their Civil War projects.  Topics should be decided upon by this Friday and submitted to me on an index card.  Students should choose a topic and then do research on that topic to make sure they have enough information to do an excellent backboard, model, and oral presentation.  Information should not be duplicated on the board or in the oral presentation.  Project rubrics will go home next week.  Work should be completed at a steady pace.  The class is also  working on Science Fair projects and should set aside time each week to work on each project.

Please contact me with any questions; the best way is by note or phone call.

Thank you always for your help and support.
Miss Jeanne Kelly
