April 10, 2012

I hope everyone had a very blessed Easter! Please remember that Thursday, April 12th, is a professional day for teachers and therefore no school for students. Next week is APRIL VACATION!!! I hope everyone has a great week!

This week I started a week long math project with the students. This will continue throughout the rest of the year in an effort to get them ready for long term assignments in the 4th grade. Math problem solving packets will be assigned on Monday and due on Friday. This is CLASSWORK and will NOT be sent home. It is the students responsibility to complete the assigned word problems during independent work time. These assignments will be part of their math grade for the 3rd Trimester.

Also there will NOT be help session tomorrow, April 11th, due to a change in our faculty meeting date. Sorry about any inconvenience this may cause.

Hello Parents,

It's hard to believe that April is here!  This school year is flying by!  April break will be here before we know it.  Here is a brief update on our current work:  The students are loving the new Science Unit on the Sun, moon, and Earth.  I will continue to send home Science books for them to re-read material.  Our Flat Stanley Social Studies Unit is starting to wind down as we label and color code world maps with the many places Stanley has visited.  We are in the middle of measurement and time in math.  Please ask your children to tell you the time to reinforce our work in the classroom.  We started Unit 5 in our Treasures Reading Anthology and Guided Reading Groups continue to meet three days a week.  Students also continue to write on a daily basis and complete about one published writing piece every 1-2 weeks.  I have all of their writings filed for our end of the year Writer's Scrapbook (a great keepsake of their hard work).   On Monday 4/2 we started to learn pronouns in our Voyages Grammer Text.  Please remember that my help sessions continue to be held on Wednesday afternoons from 2-2:30.

There will be a dress down this Thursday.  Thank you for all that you do!  God Bless!

Hello Parents,

Thank you again for your understanding during my recent absence. I am VERY happy to be healthy and back in the classroom.

Here is a little update on what we have been working on and a preview of what is coming.

Reading

Guided reading groups continue to meet 3 days a week. Students are reading Freckle Juice, Chocolate Touch, & Ramona Quimby depending on their level. We are in week 3 of a 5 week unit in the reading anthology. As I’m sure students have told you, there will be a mid term in Reading next week. Dates are in their agenda. Students will read several different selections and answer comprehension questions based on the story.

Math

We just finished a multiplication chapter and we will be starting division next week. Students scored high on the chapter 4 test which I was very pleased with.

STUDENTS SHOULD CONTINUE TO STUDY FACTS EACH NIGHT. I stress this in class on a daily basis! There will be a mid term in math next week. As we do at the end of every chapter in math, students will complete a multiple choice cumulative assessment on all prior chapters (1-4).

Science

We finished up our Matter & Mass chapter along with the lab. Science tests have been graded and sent home. I was concerned about some grades. As you know, I complete a study guide with the students prior to each test and also provide extra credit as part of the test. Please be sure that your child is taking the time to fill in the study guide and use it as a tool to study as well as everything else that I provide such as lesson check points, reviews, and chapter summaries. The study guides are made with your student in class and are directly taken from the test.

Social Studies

We completed our Christmas Around the World Unit and materials will be sent home including their passport applications, passports, and maps. Students really seemed to enjoy learning about the cultures and traditions of other countries. We will have a social studies mid term and students should be able to label continents, oceans, Canada, United States, and Mexico. Please refer to the student agenda for more information.

Special Project: Biography Book Reports

I began discussing this project on Monday with a lesson on biographies. This lesson was reinforced in Library Class on Tuesday by Ms. DiChristafaro. It was explained to students on Monday that they would be selecting a biography from the school library OR students could visit the local library or book store to select a biography. ALL STUDENTS WERE PROVIDED TIME TO SELECT A BIOGRAPHY FROM THE SCHOOL LIBRARY ON TUESDAY MORNING. I also allowed time on Thursday morning for students to go back to the school library to make a selection. Some students have made the decision to find a book on their own. This is fine with me but books are due in by Friday. They will also need to bring in a manila folder by Wednesday 1/18. Typed instructions for the project will be sent home next week. This project will be completed in class and at home. All deadlines will be posted on the homework board and students are responsible for accurately writing this into their agenda.

As always, thank you for all that you do!
