2011 - 2012, Grade 2

April 12, 2012

One more school day and we'll be enjoying April vacation.  I'm amazed!  This year has flown by.  Must be because I am enjoying myself so much!!!!

Please mark your calendars:

Vacation, as if you didn't know, is April 16-20.  I will be out on Monday and Tuesday, the 23rd and 24th, as I am going to FL to see my parents.

A mandatory First Communion meeting for parents is scheduled for April 24th at 7:00pm.

April 29th is the beginning of a VERY busy week for grade 2.  On the 29th, at the 10:30 mass, all First Communicants will sit together for the Children's Mass.  THEN.....

May 1st, 2nd and 3rd we have First Communion rehearsal from 3:30 to 4:30 at Saint Rose and Clements Church.  If your child attends Kid's Haven and will need a ride to rehearsal, please let me know so I can send home a permission slip for you to complete for your child to ride in a POV (privately owned vehicle).  If you also need your child returned to Kid's Haven, I will supply that transportation, too.  Rehearsal is mandatory.  The only exception is illness.  By the way, there will be no homework this week.

Grandparent's Mass is on Friday, May 4th at 11:00 at Sts Rose and Clement.  We encourage all grandparents to participate.   Pray for sun!  I remember only one sunny Grandparent's Mass day.  We sat outside and ate lunch.  It was DELIGHTFUL!  Children will be allowed to leave with their grandparents after lunch.

The school play, Annie, is scheduled for May 4th and 5th.  More info when I get it.

The parish breakfast is Saturday, May 5th, from 7:30 to 11:00.

AND FINALLY!

First Communion is on Sunday, May 6th, at 1:00.  Children will be required to meet in the parish hall (basement) by 12:00 for the group picture.  Please be there no later than 11:50.  The photographer will not wait for stragglers.  The Saint Rose children will be photographed by ourselves.  Each family will have a pew assigned.  Your child's banner will be hung on the end of your pew.  {You can start sending in banners to school after break.  I like to hang them where the school can see them!  I will HAVE to have the banner by May 1st.}  I usually plan for the mass to last 90 minutes.  That is time for mass, the crowning, and pictures.

The Sunday after First Communion, May 13th, is Mother's Day.  It is also another children's mass.  The First Communicants will be hosting this mass.  This is the first time we're trying this.  I encourage your child to wear his or her First Communion finery!!!!

After all of that, we'll be sliding into the end of school.  We will continue learning all the way to the end, so please try and keep your child on schedule and focused.

As for current events....

The class took their chapter test in math on Wednesday, 4/11.  We will start the chapter on bars, graphs, etc. after break.  The BIG science chapter test is tomorrow, 4/13.  The next chapter will be about Energy.  In Religion we have started the chapter about the parts of the mass.  We are having a blast learning about American symbols and monuments and memorials and landmarks in Social Studies.  We continue to read a story a week in the Reading Anthology, as well as meeting in small groups for Guided Reading.   We have almost completed learning how to form ALL cursive letters.  I am VERY impressed with the student's cursive handwriting.  :)

As always, if you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I really truely am enjoying having your children in my class!!!!

Enjoy vacation!!!!

God Bless,

Mrs. Dunlap

January 3, 2012

Happy New Year!  I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas break!

There are some Family Handbook items worthy of a reminder:

1.  Students who arrive after 7:50 are tardy.  The first tardy gets a warning.  The second and third tardies result in detention.  The fourth tardy result is In School Suspension.  Please be sure your child is in the gym at 7:45.  The rules for tardy will be strictly enforced as of 1/1/12.

2.  Uniforms:  Dress uniform socks for boys are to be dark and ANKLE length.  No socks that "hide" in the shoes.  Girls can wear navy blue knee socks or tights.  PE socks for both boys and girls are white (no stripes or decorations) ANKLE socks (no golf or short socks below the ankle).

Hair:  Girls - SIMPLE bows, barrettes or headbands are acceptable.    No beads or feathers.  Boys hair should be above the collar, cut above the brows and around the ears.

SIMPLE earrings, such as a silver or gold stud or small cross are fine.

Nail polish must be clear, no color or decoration.

Okay.  Next.

Second graders prepare for 2 sacraments this year.  The first mandatory parent meeting for First Penance is Feb. 28th at 7:00pm at Sts Rose and Clement Church.  First Penance is March 11th at 2:00pm.

The second mandatory meeting is for First Communion.  That meeting is April 24th at 7:00pm.  Due to the small number of St Rose students making First Communion this year, we will combine with the CCD students and make First Communion on May 6th at 1:00pm.

IF YOU DO NOT INTEND FOR YOUR CHILD TO MAKE THEIR SACRAMENTS WITH THE CLASS, PLEASE SEND ME A NOTE TO THAT AFFECT.  You will not be expected to attend the above mandatory meetings if your child is not making the sacraments.

If you do intend for your child to make their sacraments with the class, I HAVE to have the baptism certificate on hand prior to First Penance.  If the parish office does not have a copy of the baptism certificate, your child will not be allowed to make First Penance or First Communion.

Please be sure to send a healthy snack to school with your child.  We normally have snack around 9:30.  Also, ask your child how he or she liked the snack or lunch you packed.  There are many occasions when I intercept children throwing away most or all of what you packed because "I don't like this."  When your child tells me that, I tell them to put that item back into the lunch bucket so you will know that particular food item is not getting eaten.

I will continue to offer after school help on Mondays to those students who are struggling in a particular area.  If your child is scheduled to go to Kid's Haven, and would like to stay in the room with me to do homework, I'm okay with that.  If I have an appointment, I'll simply put your child in Kid's Haven!  If your child would like to stay after with me, please send in a note stating you allow your child to be with me after school to do homework or for additional help.

I truely am enjoying this school year.  Thank you very much for all you do to support your child and me!!!

God Bless,

Mrs. Dunlap
